Netflix brings Jhumpa Lahiri’s internationally acclaimed stories to life in a powerful new family drama exploring love, identity, loss, and belonging within an Indian American community.

Netflix has officially released the trailer, key art, and first-look images for its upcoming family drama series, ‘Unaccustomed Earth’, starring acclaimed actress Freida Pinto. Set to premiere on December 17, 2026, the eight-episode series explores the complexities of family, cultural identity, relationships, and the immigrant experience through the lives of a close-knit Indian American community.

Inspired by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jhumpa Lahiri’s internationally celebrated 2008 short story collection of the same name, the series brings together characters and narratives from separate stories, weaving them into one interconnected drama about love, desire, family, and the search for belonging.

With an ensemble cast and a creative team featuring some of the industry’s notable talents, ‘Unaccustomed Earth’ is shaping up to be an exciting new addition to Netflix’s South Asian storytelling lineup.

Freida Pinto Leads Netflix’s New Indian American Family Drama

Freida Pinto takes on the central role of Parul Chaudhury, a wife and mother whose life takes an unexpected turn following a life-changing cancer diagnosis.

Having once sacrificed her college first love to honor her father’s wishes, Parul finds herself confronting the choices she made and the life she left behind.

Determined to finally pursue the future she had always imagined, she moves her family from India back to Cambridge, Massachusetts, the place where she once felt most at home.

However, her decision sets off a chain of events that challenges the relationships within her family and disrupts the lives of those around her. As Parul begins to reclaim her own identity, the choices she makes reshape the dynamics of an entire immigrant community.

The series explores deeply personal themes, including second chances, generational expectations, family loyalty, cultural identity, and the emotional complexities of starting over.

Inspired by Jhumpa Lahiri’s Acclaimed Short Story Collection

At the heart of ‘Unaccustomed Earth’ is the literary work of Jhumpa Lahiri, whose celebrated collection of short stories was originally published in 2008.

Rather than adapting the stories as separate narratives, the Netflix series connects characters and storylines to create an ongoing family saga.

Set against the culturally vibrant communities of Cambridge and Boston, Massachusetts, the series offers a nuanced look at the experiences of multi-generational Indian American families navigating love, longing, loss, and belonging.

Lahiri is also an executive producer on the project and shared her thoughts about the television adaptation.

“Charting its own course through my stories, this series deftly layers themes of loyalty and betrayal, truth-telling, and lies. Exceptional acting and a compelling plot will speak to anyone who has ever had to navigate questions of belonging and loss,” said Jhumpa Lahiri.

The executive producing team includes Madhuri Shekar, John Wells, Ritesh Batra, Jhumpa Lahiri, Nisha Ganatra, Erica Saleh, Erin Jontow, and Celia Costas.

Produced by John Wells Productions, with Warner Bros. Television serving as the studio, the eight-episode series brings together an accomplished team of writers, directors, producers, and performers.
