Recently, Netflix released the first teaser for its upcoming Hindi film, “Jaadugar”. In Hindi, “jaadugar” means magician.
The film stars Jitendra Kumar as a small-town mediocre “football” player. Kumar became an internet phenomenon after appearing in a few viral films created by The Viral Fever YouTube channel. From here, he rose to stardom in shows like Panchayat on Prime Video and Kota Factory on Netflix. Next, Kumar landed a prominent supporting role opposite Ayushmann Khurrana in the queer love story, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan. In “Jaadugar”, Kumar seems to be revisiting familiar territory with his role, as it is similar to others he’s played in terms of comedy.
In the trailer, Kumar’s character, Meenu is introduced. We can see that Meenu is not passionate about “football”, so he barely cares about the neighborhood tournaments that he is compelled to compete in. Meenu repeatedly expresses his desire to perform magic tricks on a stage one day. However, as the plot unfolds, he bumps into a woman who “casts a spell on him”, and a romantic story continues.
To win her hand in marriage, Meenu must help take his “football” team to the finals of the local tournament. However, his team is one of the worst teams there, and the woman doesn’t love him back. From here, Meenu tries to use his training as a showman to win on the soccer field.
The official film synopsis states:
Set in a football-loving town Neemuch, Jaadugar is a story of a small-time magician, Meenu, with no athletic skill who must prove his worth in a prestigious inter-colony football tournament, in order to marry the love of his life. There are just two things against him – the girl doesn’t love him back and his team hasn’t won a game in years!
