Bollywood Featured What's Happenin'

Whoa! It's been 14 years since Devdas!

Can you believe it? It’s already been 14 years since the blockbuster film Devdas hit theaters! The film released on July 12, 2002 and is an Indian romantic drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It was based on the 1917 Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel Devdas.  The film brought us some of the biggest names in Bollywood together on one screen – Aishwarya Rai, Madhuri Dixit, and Shahrukh Khan as Devdas. Below, I have 5 reasons why this film is and will always be a classic!

#1 – I can say this in 2 words – Dola Re!

This song quickly became a staple at all events and was performed by dancers around the world whenever they got a chance to!  The song, choreographed by Saroj Khan, had two beauties in one frame!  It is a rare moment in Indian cinema as we have both Aishwarya and Madhuri together!

#2 – Shahrukh Khan as Devdas!

If anyone could live up to the standard Dilip Kumar set in the B & W version, it is Shahrukh Khan.  After all, even Dilip Kumar has said that if he and Saira Banu had a son, he would be like SRK!  So, there really was only one person who could fill Dilip Kumar’s shoes in this epic role!

#3 – Aishwarya Rai as Paro

Aishwarya Rai, who was a Miss World winner, was perfect as Paro, who was known for her beauty!  Aishwarya delivered one of her most memorable performances in Devdas.

#4 – Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi

If Dilip Kumar set the bar high for playing Devdas, Vyjayantimala definitely set the bar high for playing Chandramukhi!  The character had to be a dancing queen, and so, it was the perfect role for Madhuri Dixit! The film gave us some of her most iconic kathak performances!

#5 – The chemistry between Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya

There is no doubt that Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai sizzled on-screen in Devdas.  The chemistry between them was incredible in this film!  All it took was a glance between the two and the screen was on fire!  The two brought the characters to life and it really made the movie even more tragic because the audience loved them together, and of course, they don’t end up together!

Devdas will forever remain a classic.  The casting was flawless – no one else could have played these roles as well!  The music by Ismail Darbar remains one of the best soundtracks.  Plus, the sheer opulence of the movie – from sets to costumes – made it more unique!  The film captured hearts around the world due to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film mastery.

Happy 14 years to Devdas!
