It was a grand return for Prashant Varma to center stage at Stage One during Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2016 but this time not as a designer of the Summer/Resort 2016 collection. Prashant wears many hats as an actor, writer, director, model and designer. As a designer Prashant had scored with his extreme fashion creations that have always been very path breaking and thought provoking.
But for Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2016, he revealed other talents – acting and performing on stage with a quick teaser preview of his upcoming cabaret show, an intimate performance for friends.
The energetic and invigorating act called ‘Songs for Old Friends’ was an upbeat rendering of some of the nostalgic and inspiring songs by composers and lyricists like Stephen Sondheim, Kander & Ebb and George Gershwin. Prashant kept the pace of the act in top gear as he effortlessly belted out popular musical numbers that were not only foot tapping and magical but revolved around emotional themes like memories, friends, dreams, mistakes and above all, relationships.
Amongst an ambience that created an old world charm, with chairs and round tables, Prashant opened the show with a small anecdote about an old married couple, which had the audience in splits. As he serenaded the appreciative crowd with hauntingly popular numbers from yesteryears’ hit list to the accompaniment of piano player Aching Shaiza, Prashant also candidly interacted with the invitees. Just like his favourite saying, which he shared with the crowd that,
“Good things get better and bad things get worse”
– the show however got better and better as the performance progressed. The gathering was enthralled by a great show and one of the most relaxing and melodious happenings of the day.
When it comes to making a unique impact on stage either with a collection or otherwise, very few can compete with the creativity and talents of the incomparable Prashant Varma.
