According to official sources from the Yeravada Central Jail, Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt will be released from prison no later than March 7, 2016.
Dutt was given a five-year prison sentence in March 2013, stemming from his reported involvement in the 1993 Mumbai blasts. While he was acquitted of terrorism charges under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act, he was convicted on charges of illegal possession of arms.
Dutt served 18 months in jail prior to conviction; after multiple appeals, his original sentence was upheld in 2013, and he was ordered to undergo a remaining 42 months of imprisonment.
While in jail, Dutt developed a reputation as a model inmate. Nevertheless, his incarceration has been plagued by controversy over the multiple extensive parole and furlough periods he was granted for various personal reasons. Criticism of Dutt’s supposed ‘VIP treatment’ became a subject of national debate on several occasions, with prominent personalities from various quarters weighing in.
No doubt Bollywood will be glad to have Sanju Baba back by March!
