Aamir Khan found himself in hot water a few weeks ago after comments about the growing level of intolerance in India were deemed anti-nationalistic by members of both the film fraternity and the public. But Rakeysh Mehra, director of the iconic film ‘Rang De Basanti’ which featured Aamir in a starring role, came to the actor’s defense in a recent interview.
Mehra insisted that Aamir’s comments had been misinterpreted. He further explained how the majority of people in the nation battling their own day-to-day problems tolerance debate.
Showing his support for Aamir, Mehra said,
“I know many politicians, army officials, friends;
Aamir would rank in the first three amongst the most honest Indians
that I know. Listen to what he’s trying to say. He’s concerned about
the country. He is saying something, and then the sort of comments
that have come about, I can’t even mention the comments that have
come.”
He further spoke about how we as a society must examine our own shortcomings before shutting down someone else’s opinion. Aamir, Mehra insists, is a “true son of the soil”.
