The Star Wars franchise is undoubtedly one of the most lucrative to come out of Hollywood. The movies have had global appeal and the franchise is rumored to have a net worth of 33 billion dollars! The latest installment in the saga, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is sure to add to that total as early estimates are suggesting it will rack up at least $170 million over its domestic opening weekend when it hits theaters next December!
There are few, if any, movies in history that can claim to have an iconic status similar to that of Star Wars. With the movie – “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” all set to hit cinemas this Christmas on December 18th (USA) and December 25th in India, the excitement has reached fever pitch!
With a month to go, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is already shattering records. The seventh film in the massively popular franchise has generated more than $50 million in advance ticket sales. Renowned industry experts have said that the film will hit or exceed $200 million and is poised to set a new record in its opening weekends.
Most movies would be lucky to open to $50 million. Four weeks before its debut, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has more than that in the bank. The record-breaking advance ticket sales, are just one sign that the film could become the highest-grossing release of all time. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is also poised to break the record for a December opening held by 2012’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” at $84.6 million — giving it roughly $170 million.
To accommodate demand, a number of theaters are staying open round the clock during the movie’s first week and adding screenings at offbeat hours such as 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. There is no doubt that there will be many sold out shows and packed houses at the theater!
