Dharma Productions Celebrates 35 Years!

When you hear, Dharma Productions we automatically think of the two extremely successful people behind this brand: late Yash Johar founder of the production house and Karan Johar who took the entire production under his wing in 2004 after his father passed away.

Dharma kicked off their cinematic business with Raj Khosla’s Dostana in 1980 and at the time it was the highest grossing Bollywood film of the year! There were many other known successes like DuniyaAgneepath (1990) which won a National Award, Mahesh Bhatt’s -Gumrah and Duplicate.

Then in 1998 after Karan Johar assisted Yash Chopra on DDLJ he brought Raj and Simiran on-screen together once again as Rahul and Anjali in Kuch Kuch Hota HaiKaran’s first directorial won numerous awards and even a National Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Karan continued his works with Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and produced Kal Ho Na Ho directed by Nikhil Advani!

After Kal Ho Na Ho, Dharma continued it’s line in producing films and an occasional directed film by Karan Johar himself. He has lived up to his fathers expectations and taken Dharma Productions to an entire other level one could never imagine. All of India knows who Karan Johar is, what he looks like and what films he has made, and for a director and producer, entertainer and now actor that is very rare!

Now that we have recapped on some of Dharma’s well known films. Let me share with you our top 7 favorite Dharma Productions produced films by Karan Johar himself!

1. Kal Ho Na Ho by Nikhil Advani

Everyone can agree that this film is the number one best film of all time! From the comic Kanta Bhein between Aman and Rohit to the emotional heartbreaks to 6-din ladki-in! A beautiful concept, a beautiful story and outstanding film.

2. Dostana by Tarun Mansukhani

While Karan produced this film, he made it clear that the film was nothing like the original Dostana his father produced in 1980 and that the title was simply the same, nothing else. This film received raving feedback from critics and the audience. It’s a fresh, naughty and fun romantic-comedy film! From the chemistry between John and Abhishek to Priyanka’s sizzling unforgettable Desi Girl!

3. Agneepath by Karan Malhotra

This time it was a remake or an adaptation to the original that was made in 1990. The uncomplicated story of revenge, is hard-hitting yet entertaining, dwells on strong emotions and aggressive and forceful action!

4. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani by Ayan Mukerji

Travel, adventure, live in the moment and be free! What more can we ask for? This young and crazy film will make you want to be part of the journey every time you see it. It’s colorful, the dialogues are beautiful and one of the BEST soundtracks I’ve ever heard.

5. The Lunchbox by Ritesh Batra

Simple, beautiful and unique. This film won various awards at film festivals and since its release people are still chattering about this beautiful story.

6. Hasee Toh Phasee by Vinil Mathew

There’s nothing like watching the perfect romantic comedy film is there? The chemistry between Sid and Pari is too cute in this film and makes you want to be quirky, unique and different like Meeta and Nikhil!

7. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania by Shashank Khaitan

And lastly, my favorite! While some would think it’s a remake of DDLJ it might be, but in my eyes I like to think it’s even better! Nothing like seeing Varun and Alia on-screen together and falling in love! It’s a cuteness overload and the story of the film makes it even better all together. And if you haven’t seen the film, I’m showing you the climax ending because it the best scene of the film!
