We got to sit down with actor, model, dancer and fitness coach, Rizwan Sikander to get some fitness tips from him. The actor can currently be seen in MTV’s Roadies X2. Check out these amazing tips that you can incorporate in your life to achieve a healthier body.
What is your fitness mantra?
Fitness is a lifestyle. I want to try new things, beat records, and have experiences that only superheroes have. I am a superhero! Because it’s a lifestyle, my workout and diet are routine and I allow myself plenty of cheat meals so I never feel like I am missing out. When I nail my stunts, like the Human Flag, I am grateful for my body and stamina.
How often should one workout? Is it different for men and women?
Like I said, fitness is a lifestyle. Eat, breathe and live fitness. I start my day with my workout; some days you can catch me at the gym twice a day! Start with one day a week and build yourself up to 3 times a week to stay fit.
What would you recommend to people who need a quick 20 to 30 minute workout, but can’t go to the gym?
I recommend 10 minutes of cardio, full body stretches, and core exercises. Don’t forget to warm up and cool down.
Here’s a circuit to try (between every exercise, run for 5 minutes):
30 push ups, 30 sit ups, 30 inverted rows, 30 crunches, 30 bent over rows, 30 mountain climbers, 30 curl presses, 30 calf raises, 30 reverse crunches and 30 burpees.
What is the best way to reduce belly fat and have a flatter stomach?
70% of our fintess level is dependent on what we eat. For a flatter stomach and to reduce belly fat, start spending time in the kitchen and make healthy mindful decisions. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!
How do you keep yourself motivated to start working out and to continue working out?
With fitness being a big part of my life, I need to find ways to keep myself engaged. I love a good challenge. I push myself with a variety of exercises. I set a target and focus on beating a time, multiplying my reps, and building my stamina. As a task becomes easy, I quickly pick the next challenge.
Do you listen to music while working out? If so, can you name a couple of your favorite songs from your playlist?
I love music! Currently, there are Tomorrowland Music Festival mixes I enjoy. I work out to one hour sets done by the likes of Deadmau5. At times, I listen motivational audios by legends. This helps motivate me when the workouts may seem tough. My ipod also has Qawwalis by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan – why not allow a powerful voice to push me too?
What are some things people can do in their day to day routine, besides working out, to see results faster?
It may seem obvious, but you must commit, avoid junk food and focus on eating healthy. Diet really is that important!
What is the best way to build endurance?
Stay active, switch up your routine to keep all your muscles engaged and be creative! Dance, run, plank, swim, take it to the bedroom (winks). Just remember, as an activity feels easy or routine, it’s time to try something new.
What are some things people can do to increase their flexibility?
Always include dynamic stretching into your workout, warm up your body before your workout. Another great option is yoga.
Do you follow any specific diet?
Well…I have cheat days, I burn off the extra calories. Then I cheat again and push myself harder at the gym! My diet changed according to my current fitness goals, but you’ll catch me eating the “wrong” food a lot of the time.
What is the one food you would cheat on your diet for?
Biryani and ice cream.
How long does one wait after eating to exercise?
If you are eating a proper meal, then two hours before; if you’re eating simple carbs then half an hour is all you need.
