PLITZS New York City Fashion Week 2012

If you know anything about fashion, you know that New York Fashion Week is the place to be to get access the best of the fashion industry.  I had a unique opportunity to attend PLITZS’ New York City Fashion Week 2012.  The week featured up-and-coming designers, as well as models who are seeking their big break into the industry.

PLITZS New York City Fashion Week’s “Designer Showcase Presentation” offers a select few talented emerging designers an opportunity to showcase their collections in a professionally produced presentation during the week of New York Fashion Week without breaking their annual budget.  It was established to help introduce new designers and models into an industry that otherwise is difficult to break into.  The talent at this year’s Fashion Week, proved that you don’t have to be Calvin Klein, Prada, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, etc. to create magical pieces.  Rather, as long as you have a creative gene, and some motivation, you can create wonders.  Best of all, of the 36 select designers, two were desis!  Showcased at the event, were collections by emerging designers, Juhi Jagiasi and Peal Hossain.

Juhi Jagiasi is a physician (anesthesiologist) and also creator of WOW (“Women of the World”) designs.  After moving to the USA in 1993, the doctor found her true calling in fashion and founded Jewel of India.  Since then, she has hosted many fashion events and pageants, but fashion design remained her true passion.  Peal Hossain also found his calling in design, and so, he pursued fine arts. After spending time assisting the top tier Indian designers, he went off on his own in 2000.  His work was well accepted and he began costume designing for advertisements, theater, fashion shows and beyond.  Peal’s collection at PLITZS’ Fashion Week featured looks from the mughal era of India, accentuating all that is regal and classic.

Before the start of the show, I caught up with designer Peal and his showstopper, Prakash (who also walked the ramp for Juhi Jagiasi and other designers that night), to talk all things fashion as well as the inspiration behind Peal’s collection.  I also had a chance to talk to some other models.

Be sure to check out some of the pictures below and the interview!  And yes, I am that hyper at baseline!
