The South Asian American sensation, Janina Gavankar, is bursting with new colors these days! As if starring on TV’s hottest show, True Blood wasn’t enough, Janina is taking over the music world! Her debut single, “Waiting for Godot” hit this August!
Through her lyrics, Janina references her song to the famous play by Samuel Beckett using the same title. “Waiting for Godot,” consists of an ambient foundation later progressing into dub-step, then into a choir. This experimental mix and more is just a sample of what to expect! Her EP drops later this year via Randy Jackson’s “Friendship Collective” label.
Janina, explaining their musical union, quotes:
One day Randy Jackson (of American Idol) called! He said, ‘You’re weird! I like it! I think you’re going to make great music!’ Now I’m releasing those works on his label.”
“Waiting For Godot” is a collaborative creation with German tastemaker Apparat and producer Cory Enemy. Gavankar has recently enlisted electronic musician, Trifonic, to help her create her EP.
Secret to her success? Her roots and upbringing. Three quarters Indian and one quarter Dutch, interaction with people from all walks of life gave her a passion for pretty much– everything. Janina’s mélange of sound reflects her experience as a child of immigrants.
Janina, makes clear:
“I don’t give a s*** about who’s ‘cool’. I’m only interested in working with people I already know and love, or people I’ve been salivating over for years.”
In 2010, Janina reworked Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown”(listen HERE) to much acclaim from fans and fellow artists, including West himself! Gavankar’s acting credit includes “Leigh” from ABC’s The Gates, and “Shiva” on The League. A remix of “Waiting For Godot” and more tracks from her forthcoming EP will be coming up!
