Bollywood What's Happenin'

Movie Review: India's new superhero Ra.One!

This year’s biggest film, the highly anticipated “Ra.One” is FINALLY OUT! After giving the Bollywood industry some of its greatest hits Shah Rukh Khan has proved time and time again why he is truly King Khan, but will “Ra.One” be another one of his greatest hits?

Cast:

  • Shahrukh Khan as G.One / Shekhar Subramanium
  • Kareena Kapoor as Sonia Shekhar Subramanium
  • Arjun Rampal as Ra.One
  • Armaan Verma as Prateek Subramanium
  • Shahana Goswami as Jenny Nayar
  • Tom Wu as Akashi
  • Dalip Tahil as Barron, head of the gaming company Shekhar works for
  • Suresh Menon as Taxi Driver
  • Satish Shah as Iyer, Shekhar’s neighbor and friend in India

Of course now Shah Rukh Khan movie would be complete without a few guest appearances!

  • Rajinikanth as Chitti (Guest appearance)
  • Sanjay Dutt as Khalnayak (Guest appearance)
  • Priyanka Chopra as The Damsel in Distress (Guest appearance)
  • Amitabh Bachchan (Voice-over)

Ra.One is about a simple, hard working, Tamil gaming expert, Shekhar Subramaniam. His world consists of his feminist wife Sonia Subramaniam played by Kareena Kapoor, and his mischievous son Prateek Subramaniam, played by Armaan Verma. Prateek thinks his goofy dad is just totally uncool! In an effort to impress his son, who thinks villains are “cool,” Shekhar creates a video game where the villain is invincible. Along with the help of his partners Jenny and Akashi played by Shahana Goswami and Tom Wu respectively, as well as their team of gaming experts they create Ra.One the most powerful villain there is. G.One is the good hero created in the likeness of Shekhar to take on Ra.One!

But right before the release of the game to the public things start to go terribly wrong. Ra.One seems to take on a life of his own! Now we can tell you the rest of the story, but where’s the fun in that? You’re just going to have to hit the theaters to find out!

So what did we think of this movie?

Rating: 4/5

Well, for a Bollywood movie the special effects were absolutely amazing! You definitely have never seen anything like this before, I would say it was worth the millions the creators have put into this movie. This movie is pushing the limit and bringing the quality of Bollywood movies to another level.

At the start of the movie it seems like there are bits and pieces of other Hollywood superhero movies involved like “Iron Man,” or “Batman,”  but as the movie flows on there are more unique features. It is actually a family movie, reminiscent of action movies geared towards a younger crowd like the “Spy Kids” series, not exactly the thrilling “Dark Knight,” but nonetheless a fun sci-fi action flick to watch, a 4 Stars out of 5 in our book!

“Ra.One” isn’t some deep and meaningful, romantic movie filled with a song and dance routine every 10 minutes. Ra.One is a true action flick, with quite a few chuckle-worthy scenes and even a catchy tune or two. Fans are already in love with “Chammak Challo” but the sweet “Dildara” and soulful “Bhare Naina”  are tracks that will get you hooked as well.

Shah Rukh Khan is adorable as the goofy Shekhar and his robot-like acting as G.one isn’t so bad either (the blue eyes are a bit questionable though.) Kareena Kapoor, as always, is on point with her comedy, looks gorgeous and is very likeable in the movie. Armaan Verma is definitely the star of the show!  He was very believable as Prateek, a natural actor!

The young actor is not only a cutie but quite talented as well to be able to make a statement even with Bollywood hero’s like Shah Rukh Khan and Arjun Rampal in the room! Shahana Goswami and Tom Wu were amazing supporting roles that not only added some comedy to the movie but helped move the story along. Satish Shah is another comedic side role that pops up sporadically to provide a laugh in the second half of the film. One thing I don’t understand is why does the white man robbing Shekhar and Prateek speaks Hindi? In fact, it seems that a lot of the non-Indian characters in the movie, which is set in London by the way, speak in Hindi? Hmmm…

Anyway, overall a nice film, lots of action, insanely awesome special effects, some laughs, some head bopping songs and even a sniffle or two for the family affair. Do check it out and let us know what you think!!
