They say New York is the “City of Dreams.” If you’re like most desis, you’ve probably dreamt about the world of Bollywood, wondering what life would be like if you were a famous Bollywood celebrity. Now, you don’t need to wonder any more as top actor, Anupam Kher, plans to open a branch of his film school, Actor Prepares, in NYC. Currently, Actor Prepares has three main locations in India (Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Ambdavad). After the school’s success in India, Kher then opened up a branch in London, UK. Now, the actor has set his sights on NYC to help turn the dreams of US desis into a reality.
The launch is being announced in association with the chairman and CEO of TV Asia, H.R. Shah. TV Asia was established in April 1993 by Amitabh Bachchan and was North America’s first 24/7 television channel for the South Asian community. In 1997, H.R. Shah took over the channel and expanded it to become a channel whose focal point is the Indian community at large. Regarding the new venture with Kher, Shah reflected: “There are a lot of talented Indian American actors in North America who have no platform to promote their talent.” However, with the launch of Actor Prepares, NRI Indians will be able to access the world of Bollywood more readily.
Kher recently told the Times of India,
“Acting is a craft which is universal and can be taught, learned and perfected. It is a craft that has now transcended regional and national barriers as reflected in productions with global themes and locales in an era of crossover films.”
He further noted that the school will not limit itself to being a Bollywood-centric training school, but will train its students to work in any film genre. He is hopeful that the school will provide a way for desi hopefuls to get a break not only in Bollywood, but also in Hollywood.
So, what are you all waiting for lovely readers? Get to NY and make your dreams a reality!
