Beauty, lifestyle and endless foodie lover. Content creator Sumona Seth shared some of her endless daily inspiration behind @looksby_sumona. Sumona is an incredibly creative influencer. She shares her daily looks and thoughts on social media. Looks we all aspire to embrace. Similarly, being a Desi girl Sumona is no stranger to embracing her culture! We had the exciting privilege of gaining more insight into the life of Sumona Seth. This is what Sumona shared with us:
Being a beauty and lifestyle blogger, makeup artist and model part from a full time job as a medical nurse, how would you describes yourself as a person and why? Give us a little background into the life of Sumona.
I haven’t yet figured out what I love doing the most but I’m happy and blessed to be able to do all of this and hopefully continue to do more. Fortunately, I found many different passions that I’m trying to juggle. It ain’t easy but it’s so worth it. I want to give acting another shot as well. It works because I have a great support system and I couldn’t do it without the help of my husband, family and friends.
When did you first start blogging and how did the interest start?

Following your amazing work, you have recently incorporated looks for each day of Durga Puja. On the topic, what does Durga Puja mean to you? What makes it significant to you?
I believe Navratri and Durga Puja are each a festival that celebrates women and women empowerment. We, as women, go through many facets of life and take on all sorts of different roles in our journey and that deserves a round of applause. It’s even more significant for me because my mother works a full-time job and it’s only during this time of year that she takes off work s we could be together as a family celebrating this auspicious holiday. I loved prepping my looks weeks in advance to Durga Puja. We would head over to Jackson Heights to do “puja shopping” and then come home and create looks for each day for both her and myself. So I wanted to give all those memories a way to shine through my work in this collection.

How would you describe the different looks and what inspired you to do this project?
All the looks were created with the saris that my mother gifted me through out the years. She would buy me saris and other Indian wear for each day of Durga Puja. My inspiration is my mother because my existence in this world goes to my Ma (for me she is the Devi I believe exists in real life). I dedicate this beautiful collection to her as every piece speaks to me about my mother. Wearing these pieces made me feel strong, confident, beautiful and so elegant. That is everything I believe my mother encompasses.

You mentioned that you incorporated a lot of childhood memories, tell us more about those memories. How did it impact the inspiration behind this project?
My parents came here many years ago when racism was very much apparent, but my father went against all odds to build a community with common faiths and beliefs that was intended to last. To prepare for the upcoming Durga Puja season, all the women would come together in each other’s houses and plan on how to celebrate the festival in this new country. The children would gather to prepare devotional dance pieces for the entertainment part of the celebrations while the men would handle the logistics of how to host such a glamorous event. From the age of three till this day, Durga Puja season has been my favorite time of year because I would be with my entire family celebrating the triumph of Ma Durga (Goddess of Strength – Shakti) destroying the evil demon, Mahishasura.
As a content creator, what do you find the most challenging?
As a creator, I always want to ensure that I create meaningful content that will resonate, bring awareness and be engaging for my followers. I recently learned to stop self doubting myself and just go for it. I’m glad I did but I have a long way to go still.

How do you think this beautiful Durga Puja project will impact other South Asians?
I hope everyone was able to take a moment and embrace how beautiful, fun and meaningful are our rituals and traditions. My parents did an amazing job at passing down our culture to me and I hope that I was able to demonstrate that through each look.

As a South Asian blogger, what do you enjoy most about embracing your culture publicly?
I enjoy sharing my personal thoughts, memories and seeing how similar it is with other South Asians. I also love getting feedback from non South Asians who are intrigued and want to know more. Every culture, just like the South Asian culture, has a uniqueness to them and I genuinely believe its very important to share that uniqueness so that people are more aware and tolerant.
What advice would you give other upcoming bloggers and artists shuffling their passions all at once with a full-time job?
If you’re passionate enough about something, you should make time for it. You may not have all the tools and equipment but start somewhere and the passion will grow with you. Listen to those who encourage your dreams and cheer you on, and seek advice and keep an open mind. Lastly, just give your passion a chance and enjoy the experience.
