We love celebrating festival and this love is prominent in Bollywood films. Certain films seem incomplete if they do not celebrate at least 2-3 festivals in their 3hours run time. They even feel incomplete if they do not celebrate Karva Chauth – a festival of love, fasting and loads of drama.
Right from the women getting up early to eat a heavy meal before sunrise to a grand function in the evening to see the moon – films have it all. The application of henna, the retelling of the Karva Chauth story and lots more is also part of the festive mood along with heavy jewellery, clothes and makeup. If that wasn’t enough, Bollywood has songs devoted to the festival also.
Today, as we celebrate Karva Chauth, we bring you a few scenes where the festival played an important role in the lives of the characters:
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge
Who doesn’t remember this scene where Simran (Kajol) kept a fast for Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) and broke it by drinking water from his hands? Well, it’s rememberable because at that moment she was engaged to another. Not only that, her family knew nothing about their affair also. The dizzy spell and fainting was just the right amount of Bollywood drama needed in the film.
Baghban
An old couple fasting for each other years after their first is a sweet moment. But theirs wasn’t sweet – it was sad. The couple were celebrating their first Karva Chauth away from each other and could only speak over the phone. What’s even sadder is that both were alone at the moment and one didn’t even have food to break the fast.

Got some problem with this mention? Well, it may not have been a big deal for a college girl to fast for her boyfriend and then have it broken by him breaking into your house! Well, this couple is one of the reasons many 90s kids started keeping it for their bfs.
Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham
K3G celebrated Karva Chauth on a larger than life scale (in London) and had not one but two confessions made. The first one was of Rohan (Hrithik Roshan) singing and telling all that Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) and Anjali(Kajol) are his brother and sister-in-law. The second was of Pooja (Kareena Kapoor Khan) accepting her love and announcing it to the world that she loves Rohan.
Biwi No. 1
This scene in the film became the turning point in the lives of the characters. Pooja (Karisma Kapoor) follows – sorry is dragged by her pet dog to see her cheating husband Prem (Salman Khan). There she sees him breaking the fast of his girlfriend Rupali (Susmita Sen). What followed is hell for the cheating guy!
