These days it seems impossible to open up the news and not read something depressing. Its not that terrible and tragic events haven’t occurred since the beginning of time but given the constant influx of news online and the incessant chatter of social media, when something morbidly intriguing occurs it’s everywhere. What’s not everywhere in waking sight is the ongoing hard work done by charities day in and day out. Urban Asian has decided to highlight the altruistic work done by a handful of charities, and we encourage everyone to volunteer their time.
Nanubhai Education Foundation
The Nanubhai Education Foundation is passionately committed to transforming public education in rural India. Since 2004, the Foundation has worked in largely tribal regions in southern Gujarat. In the Bardoli taluka, its base of operations, approximately 25% of the population lives below the poverty line, and 34.2% of the population is illiterate. In the past decade, the Indian school system has made great strides. Fully 98% of school-age children in Gujarat have access to primary education. Nanubhai’s mission is to improve the quality of that education. It partners with committed schools, principals, teachers, and NGOs in order to improve classroom instruction and inspire students to excel. By focusing on quality English language instruction, Nanubhai prepares its students to participate in India’s rapidly globalizing economy. Nanubhai is proud that 9 Scholarships have been distributed, 8,000 students were taught English, and 12 teachers trained. Hospital for Hope
Hospital for Hope dreams of providing much needed health care in a very neglected pocket of India, to empower over 100,000 villagers for a brighter and healthier future. The Hospital for Hope team consists of 5 volunteers in their late 20s/early 30s, holding full-time demanding careers. Their work with these villages in eastern India started 13 years ago, when they were in college, and they have previously built a library and high school lab. In the last 4 years they have engaged in their biggest project: organizing events all across the US, leveraging social media, and connecting with partners to raise the entire amount to design, build and staff this hospital. Our organization is extremely lean and efficient, with every single cent reaching the people it’s meant for. Now that Hospital for Hope has inaugurated the hospital the team is working to actively ensure that the hospital is sustainable and, that it can stand on its own feet. South Asian Breast Cancer Awareness
The primary goal of SABCA is to create awareness regarding Breast Cancer in the South Asian communities starting from within the US. In 2013, they hosted a successful fundraiser: Laugh in the Face of Breast Cancer, created marketing in Hindi as well as English which allows them to effectively communicate with a larger number of South Asians, and solidified their alliance with WorldWide Breast Cancer. In 2014, they hope to expand their community outreach, create further alliances, confirm sponsors and expand the “Laugh in the Face of Breast Cancer” fundraiser to additional cities. The best way to get involved is to reach out to us and we can setup a community based awareness event.
