If there is one sure short way to success at the box office in 2016, it’s biopics. From real life heroes to cricket legends, Bollywood is booming with bio-pics this year. And to be honest, it’s about time. For decades, Bollywood has cashed in on fantasies but with bio-pics they have taken entertainment to a whole other level.
The year began with Akshay Kumar and Nimrit Kaur starrer Airlift. While the film was not a complete biopic, Akshay Kumar’s character was inspired by two real life heroes who helped conduct the largest airlift in human history. This was followed by the story of a real hero, Neerja. The awe-inspiring Sonam Kapoor took home the trophy with this one. Considered to be one of her most brilliant performance till date, the film continues to cash in on the box office. In coming weeks, audiences are expected to come face to face with even more powerful heroes including Sarabjit( Randeep Hooda) and Kalpna Chawla (Pooja Batra).
While Bollywood continues to laud heroes in battle, technology and life saving heroic acts, it’s heroes on the field – the cricket field. There was a time when cricketers aspired to be actors. Some even did a film or two but now, it is the actor who looks forward to stepping into the shoes of the cricketer. This thirst gives rise to innovative and eye catching films such as Azhar (Emraan Hashmi), Sachin and MS Dhoni (Sushant Singh Rajput).
