Kathan Gandhi from Jamnabai Narsee School, was at his best performance when he beat his fellow school mate Shanai Mehta in the finals of Boys Singles Pickleball tournament held on December 5, 2015 in Mumbai during the 1st Mayor’s Cup Championship!
Shanai was a hot favorite since he had already won a medal at the International Tournament held in Madrid, Spain, however Kathan outplayed his mate Shanai in the finals by defeating 2 straight sets 11-4, and 11-2. Kathan was also Boy’s Champion in the first Mayor Cup Pickleball Tournament held at the Andheri Sports Complex in Mumbai.
Around 80 boys and girls from 36 schools in Mumbai took part of the one day tournament which was played at three outdoor courts at the Sports complex. One tennis court was also converted into 2-Pickleball courts where imported portable nets were used for the first time in India!
The final match of Girls singles was breath taking as one girl from Rayan International, Tanvita Thakur has to fight tooth and nail to bad the gold medal from MLDC collage’s Swapnaili Angre. This match lasted for three sets, where after losing first set 13-11, latter on Tanvita came back and scored 11-6, and 11-8 to defeat Angre.
In the Boys doubles category, pair from Paranjape High School, Andheri, Sahil Suryavanshi and Sahil Khandagle beat Dixt Road School, Vile Parle pair, in 2 straight sets 11-8 and 11-9.
In the category of Girls Doubles, pair from Sanmitra High School Goregaon beat team from Rayan International 11-2 and 11-5. From team Sanmitra was Isha Sakpal and Bhakti Adiverkar whereas on team Rayan International was Ishita Singh and Palak Bhandari.
Based on the overall medals won, Team from Rayan International, Goregaon was declared as Champions as they lifted the 1st Mayor Cup Pickleball Championship. Mr. Subodh Pethe of Waman Hari Pethe, well-known Jewellers, distributed the awards to the winning champions of the tournament.
