Beginning this week, Neflix has announced that it will stream the Indian mafia epic ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ as an 8-part series.
Originally clocking in at 319 minutes, Anurag Kashyap’s magnum opus was divided into two parts before its commercial release in India. The Netflix series will be edited into eight episodes and streamed globally, with English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Chinese subtitles available.
Kashyap recently lauded digital distribution, pointing out its potential for expanding a film’s audience while sidestepping the problems that censorship laws can create for filmmakers.
‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ debuted at Cannes in 2012 to glowing reviews. A Godfather-esque saga that is part action thriller and part musical, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ focuses on the power struggle between warring families of the coal mafia in Jharkhand.
