Nurse Aruna Shanbaug was paralyzed and left with severe brain damage after she was brutally attacked by a a ward attendant in Mumbai’s King Edward Memorial hospital back in 1973. Shanbaug was changing her clothes when KEM ward attendant, Sohanlal Bhartha Walmiki, attacked her. He used dog chain and strangled her, which cut off the blood to her brain and resulted in severe brain damage that left her in a vegetative state.
Walmiki was caught, however, he only served seven years for robbery and attempted murder, while Shanbaug spent the rest of her life in a coma. She was kept alive by being fed through her nose, but her health declined last week after she developed pneumonia. A spokesman for the hospital said,
“Ms Shanbaug died at 08:30am on Monday. She was admitted to the intensive care unit and put on ventilator support.”
Many Bollywood celebrities expressed their grief on Twitter.

A 42-yr struggle ends as #ArunaShanbaug leaves for a better life in a better world. A chilling story rewritten by KEM's compassion. RIP.

It is terrible and inhuman to be trapped inside a lifeless body for 42 years. Finally Aruna Shanbaug can rest in peace.
