Poorna Jagannathan opens up about facing sexual abuse and violence

We have recently seen actresses speak up and shed light on issues like women’s rights, mental health, etc and it seems Poorna Jagannathan is ready to contribute her story to raise awareness and break the cycle of violence. She has teamed up with Wevolve Global and has released a video on YouTube, where the actress speaks about dealing with her alcoholic father, being sexually abused by a neighbor at the age of 9 and horrific bus rides in Delhi.

Poorna has also teamed up with Yael Farbar to bring a play called ‘Nirbhaya The Play‘, which is based on the Delhi bus gang rape of a 23 year old student, Jyoti Singh and Poorna’s own real life experience. The play showcases five women coming forward and breaking their own silence on sexual violence on stage. The play tears away the shame that often keeps survivors quiet and encourages people to speak up about violence.
