Facebook page Humans of Bombay inspired by Humans of New York put up a post where actress, Kalki Koechlin speaks about facing sexual abuse as a child. She believes parents need to start talking to their children about sex, so that a child can recognize abuse and shield themselves from the abusers.
She says, “The reason i spoke out about my sexual abuse is not to get people to feel sorry for me but to give others who have had similar circumstances the confidence to talk about it. I allowed someone to have sex with me at the age of nine, not understanding fully what it meant and my biggest fear after was that my mother would find out. I felt it was my mistake and so I kept it hidden for years. If I had had the confidence or awareness to confide in my parents it would have saved me years of complexes about my own sexuality. It’s important that parents remove the taboo around the word sex or private parts so kids can speak openly and be saved from potential abuse.”
This isn’t the first time Kalki has spoken about facing sexual abuse. In an interview with NDTV about a year ago, Kalki had revealed that she and a friend of hers were sexually abused as children. We recently reported how actress Poorna Jagannathan revealed how she faced sexual abuse by a neighbor.
While we feel that tt’s brave of Kalki to speak about her ordeal, a section of people feel that Kalki speaking out about it is a publicity stunt as the actress has a movie, Margartia, With A Straw, releasing in a week. What are your thoughts on this? Let us know in the comment section below.
