These days, it really seems that violence against women in India is a growing problem. However, as much as violence seems to be growing, it seems women are getting stronger and are beginning to take action against such abuse. Veteran Indian Actress Rati Agnihotri, who was quite popular in the 1980s, is one such woman who is done taking the abuse. On Saturday, she registered a complain against her husband, businessman, Anil Virwani. This complaint is the second she filed over the last couple weeks. On March 7th, police sources reveal, that she had orally lodged a complaint against Virwani as he had apparently fought with her on trivial issue and then allegedly assaulted her. Police sources also revealed that she had come in with abrasions on her hands due to the alleged beating by her husband.
Now, on Saturday March 14th, she has filed an official complaint with the Worli police. They have recorded her statement and have also registered a case under the following sections of the Indian Penal Code — Section 498 (harassment to a married woman), Section 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), Section 506 (criminal intimidation) and Section 350 (criminal force). According to reports, as of late, her husband had been constantly harassing and torturing her. The couple married in 1985, and were leading a pretty happy life. They have one son together, Tanuj Virwani, who was born in 1987. The abuse began recently after he suffered business losses. I strongly believe that is no excuse for him to attack her.
Senior inspector of the Worli Police, Vinay Kulkarni, said the following:
“We have filed the case and are investigating the matter. Agnihotri’s statement has been recorded where she has complained about torture and assault by her husband. We have registered a harassment case against her husband under IPC 498 A, 323 and 506 of torture, assault and death threats. We will soon be summoning her husband in this context.”
S Jaykumar, deputy police commissioner (zone-III), added,
“Rati Agnihotri, who married Anil Virwani in 1985 filed complaint against him today saying he had mentally tortured her besides assaulting her physically. A case has been registered against Virwani under IPC sections 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 350 (use of criminal force) and 506 (criminal intimidation). She did not mention any specific reason as to why her husband tortured and thrashed her. We will investigate the case and appropriate action would be initiated.”
If he is guilty of the alleged crimes, it is hoped that the police do punish him according to the Indian laws.
