Top 10: Bollywood Actors of 2014

2014 is quickly drawing to a close!  So, it is the perfect time to reflect back and think about the movies that have been.  While Santa is busy compiling his naughty and nice list, I’ve been busy compiling a list of the top 10 Bollywood actors from 2014!  It’s always a hard task to narrow the list down to just 10, but these are the actors who seemed to stand out in 2014!  Check out the list below and let us know if you agree or not!

#10 – Shahid Kapoor

There is no doubt that Shahid Kapoor has had quite a bumpy ride when it comes to his reel as well as real life.  At the start of his career, he was immediately dubbed a chocolate boy and relegated to more romantic roles.  Still, he persisted and had a few hits under his belt such as Vivah (2006) and Jab We Met (2007).  Yet, both films did not showcase his full acting potential and showed that he can do subdued performances.  He was almost written off, but broke back to the top of the pack with Kaminey (2009).  Since then, there was no doubt that he was a good actor, but he still faced struggles.  2010-2013 he was not part of any major blockbuster, and it was unclear whether or not he could recover from such a bad phase.  Luckily, that all changed this year, 2014, when he played the title role in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider.  Shahid only received positive reviews for his acting and he has truly displayed his full potential.  For his performance in Haider alone, Shahid deserves to make it to the top 10.

#9 – Fawad Khan

2014 saw the debut of Fawad Afzal Khan, a Pakistani singer, model, and actor, who decided to break into Bollywood.  He had dominated Pakistani television, and then chose to try Bollywood.  Earlier this year, he debuted opposite Sonam Kapoor in Khoobsurat, and I’m sure you’ll agree, he was the perfect prince in the film!  The film bagged him a “best debut” award at the “Masala Awards” and also at the “Hello Hall of Fame Awards.”  The actor is the perfect combination of looks and acting prowess, and we expect big things from him.

#8 – Ranveer Singh

Ranveer Singh has everything a guy could want – looks, awesome acting skills, and a great personality… and not to mention, a great woman by his side – Deepika Padukone!  Although 2013 saw him battle dengue fever, he bounced back and 2014 brought him some great luck!  This year, we saw Singh in three films – Gunday with his bestie Arjun Kapoor, cameo in Finding Fanny starring Deepika, and Kill Dil.  Each film showcased a different aspect of his acting talent.  Best of all, was his response to Hrithik Roshan’s “Bang Band” dare, which reminded us of how charismatic and funny Singh truly is!  He lands at the #8 spot on this list!

#7 – Varun Dhawan

Varun Dhawan belongs at number 7 as he managed to stay in the press, and also starred as the protagonist of two commercially successful comedies— Main Tera Hero and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.  For the latter, he even bagged a Stardust Award for best Actor in a Comedy/Romance!  He is already busy filming two films due to release in 2015.  Although he may not have been student of the year, he is definitely climbing the ranks in top actor of the year!

#6 – Riteish Deshmukh

2014 has been an especially good year for Riteish Deshmukh, who bagged the best role of his life – becoming a father – earlier this year!  If we ignore the disaster that was Humshakals, we can clearly see that Riteish is truly an actor that is here to stay.  Although he is loved best for his comic roles, he proved in Ek Villain that he is a lot more versatile as an actor.  Additionally, Riteish debuted in Marathi cinema with Lai Bhaari Maauli.  So, with three amazing events in one year, there is no doubt he belongs at #6.

#5 – Arjun Kapoor

If Bollywood is looking for a new “Mr. India” after Anil Kapoor, they should look no further than Arjun Kapoor.  In 2014, Arjun starred in three commercially successful films – Gunday, 2 States, and Finding Fanny.  His performances in all three were generally well received, with Finding Fanny being considered his best performance to date.  Unlike some others in Bollywood, Arjun is trying out different looks and acting styles in all his films.  He is definitely a contender to be the next superstar of Bollywood.

#4 – Hrithik Roshan

Hrithik definitely had one of the worst years in terms of his real life – he and Susanne Khan officially got a divorce.  But, with his sole release of the year, Bang Bang, Hrithik proved he can still set the big screen on fire.  As always, Hrithik’s dance moves were praised, but his acting talent again shone through in the film.  He is one of the few actors who can pull off such a demanding action role.  We hope that good luck continues to follow him into 2015!

#3 – Shahrukh Khan

There are some in the industry who have written that Shahrukh Khan is no longer a bankable star… but boy did he prove such people wrong!  2014 saw him in Bhootnath Returns, a cameo in Youngistaan, and most importantly, in Happy New Year.  For Happy New Year, Shahrukh Khan and his fellow actors from the film did a highly successful world tour called “Slam!”  Like the tour, the film became one of the biggest successes of the year!

#2 – Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan is known to be Mr. Perfectionist.  As such, every time his name is connected to a film, there are extremely high expectations – more so than with any other star.  The hype for his sole release of the year, PK, had begun a long time ago.  The film, which released a couple weeks ago, has so far lived up to expectations!  Many are praising Aamir’s acting talent in the film and claim it is his best performance to date!  Aamir seems to have the magic touch for choosing great roles!  Hoping he continues his magic next year!

#1 – Salman Khan

Landing at the coveted number one spot is Salman Khan, who was part of some of the biggest commercial successes of the year.  His film, Kick, ranks at number one for having made the most money this year at the box office in India – 231.85 crore.  He was also a part of Jai Ho, which made 116 crore at the box office.  He also did a cameo in a couple other films.  Not to mention, he returned as the host of TV’s Bigg Boss.  2014 has really proven that, at least this year, Salman is the Bigg Boss of the Box office!

Although there are plenty of new actors who can shoot to the top in the coming years, 2014 proved that the Khan trio is still providing tough competition to the newer stars.  Lets see if their reign continues into 2015, or if we will have a new number one next year!
