December 17, 2012 will forever be known as the day that the gang rape of a 23-year old female student occurred on a bus in Delhi – see article here. However, it is hoped that day marks a change in India’s history regarding women’s rights and protection against rape. It is hoped that the country makes stricter laws and takes action to prevent such incidents from repeating themselves again.
Since the incident, protesters have been marching in India, Bollywood celebs have been discussing the issue via Twitter, and the whole world has been shaken with anger and outrage at this incident. Not to mention, that news of additional gang rapes in that time period have made rape an issue that India must tackle immediately. Officials can no longer hide from the issue.
It is with background in mind that a petition has been created in India to force President Pranab Mukherjee to take action. Many celebs have already signed it, and the goal is to have “176,782 supporters” (preferably more!) sign it. So, we are urging all our Urban Asian readers to also sign it.
Rape is not just a women’s rights issue. It is a human rights issue. Such evil affects all of us & it needs to be stopped. Women should not have to be put through such a horrific act!
We know our UA readers are always ready to make positive impact in the world and thank you in advance for signing it! Please spread the word and share this article so we get more signatures for the petition!
