Bollywood: Top 10 Songs of 2012

Can you believe it? 2012 is almost over!  In only a few more days it will be 2013!  So, it’s time to provide you Bollywood buffs with a top 10 countdown of this year’s hot tunes.  Check out the countdown below and let me know if you agree or not!

#10 – Halkat Jawani (Heroine)

These days, it seems item numbers are the most popular songs.  Halkat Jawani is one such song that received a lot of air play in 2012.  Kareena showcased her sexy moves in the number and proved herself to be almost as good a dancer as her older sis, Karisma Kapoor.  Plus, has there ever been a year Sunidhi Chauhan’s songs didn’t make a top 10 list?

#09 – Pareshaan (Ishaqzaade)

Priyanka Chopra may be the Chopra everyone knows, but her cousin, Parineeti Chopra, wowed audiences with Ishaqzaade.  This song relayed the anguish of a girl in love with the right amount of emotion added by singer, Shalmali Kholgade.

#08 – Pani Da Rang (Vicky Donor)

Vicky Donor was an unexpected hit in 2012.  It’s unique theme of being a sperm donor surprisingly resonated with the otherwise reserved Indian populace.  Best of all, actor Ayushmann Khurrana provided his own vocals to this song!  He was the perfect lead actor in the movie, but truly won us over with his smooth voice.

#07 – Challa (Jab Tak Hain Jaan)

Jab Tak Hain Jaan is one album that will never get old.  The movie was Yash Chopra’s last directorial venture and the last that brought him and Shahrukh Khan together.  However, it was the first to see the unique Shahrukh Khan and Katrina Kaif pairing.   Rabbi Shergill’s voice really suited Shahrukh Khan.

#06 – Anarkali Disco (Housefull 2)

There’s no doubt about it – Malaika Arora Khan is the queen of item numbers.  In Anarkali Disco she proves again that she has eternal youth and eternal dance moves!  The song is an interesting twist to the story of Salim and Anarkali, because this Anarkali has a mind of her own!  Not to mention, Mamta Sharma, proved her singing prowess again in yet another classic item number!  Mamta had earlier sang Munni Badnam in Dabangg, which was also pictured on Malaika!

#05 – Ishq Wala Love (Student of the Year)

I’m sure you’ve heard your desi friends quoting this song at least once this year!  Student of the Year introduced us to some fresh new leads – Aliya Bhatt, Siddharth Malhotra, and Varun Dhawan – but also gave us fresh new music.  Ishq Wala Love has a slower beat than other songs on this top #10, but it’s just as magical as the others.  Sung by Shekhar Ravjiani, Salim Merchant, and Neeti Mohan, this song falls at #5 on this list.

#04 – Mashallah (Ek Tha Tiger)

Recently, Salman Khan movies tend to have amazing soundtracks.  Ek Tha Tiger was no different and featured hits Banjara and Mashallah.  I chose the latter over Banjara because it has received more air play and is far more popular.  Personally, I love Banjara more, but as Mashallah was the more popular track it, had to give it the #4 spot.  The unique arabic/middle eastern vibe of the song quickly caught on with listeners.  Sung by Wajid and the fantastic Shreya Ghoshal, the song featured all the right elements.  Check it out below.

#03 – Ishq Shava (Jab Tak Hain Jaan)

Ishq Shava may be one of the most played songs of 2012 and is sung by urban desi singer, Raghav and Shilpa Rao.  At UrbanAsian, we’ve been following singer Raghav’s career for a while (check out our latest interview with him here).  So, we were not in the least bit surprised when he got a chance to sing for Yash Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan.  The movie may be known as Yash Chopra’s last, but it will also be known as the one where Raghav left a lasting impression with his voice!  We expect many more Bollywood offers coming Raghav’s way after this song.  Right now, he’s busy focusing on his US launch so stay tuned to UrbanAsian for more on this singer!  Check out the song below as pictured on Shahrukh Khan and Katrina Kaif.

#02 – Radha (Student of the Year)

Student of the Year may have been one of the most youthful soundtracks of the year.  Radha has been playing everywhere you go and has been the song of choice at all desi events.  It almost made it to #1 in this countdown, but I’m sure you’ll agree that song #1 belongs at the top.  Radha had a catchy beat, and made you want to dance the second it played.

#01 – Chikni Chameli (Agneepath)

No surprise here!  Katrina Kaif’s gyrated her way to the top in this sexy item number from Agneepath, helping “Chikni Chameli” become the hottest song of 2012!  Chikni Chameli was the Hindi version of the marathi classic, Kombadi Palali, and received just as much success, if not more!  Check out the song below!

Songs that almost made the list!

Dil Mera Muft Ka (Agent Vinod)

With Dil Mera Muft Ka, Kareena showcased another side of her dancing skills – the mujra side!  The dance wasn’t your typical mujra song, it had a modern twist, but the music and sound of the song are what were most popular.  This list would not have been complete without this track from Agent Vinod.  The track had several singers – Nandini Srikar, Muazzam, Rizwan, Shadab Faridi, Altamush Faridi, Shabab Sabri – who all added magic to the number.

Dreamum Wakeupum (Aiyya)

While the movie Aiyya failed to live up to expectations, this song stuck with listeners.  It’s funny how they used basic words to sound more south Indian!  The upbeat sound and unique lyrics were great but there were better numbers in 2012.  However, Sowmya Raoh did a great job with the vocals.
