Events What's Happenin'

Lots of LOL’s at NYC installment of No Laughing Matter comedy show

For a show called “No Laughing Matter,” there was certainly plenty of hilarity at last night’s event. The culminating installment of a 3-stop tour including Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City, No Laughing Matter amassed an array of South Asian celebrities—some of them making their stand-up debuts!—to show off their comedic chops to a humor-hungry audience.

Anish Shah

Bring together more than 9 Desi entertainers and no subject is off limits! Whether it was MTV’s Akaash Singh comparing the attractiveness of Disney princesses, Outsourced’s Parvesh Cheena’s straight-faced confessions of redeeming his self-esteem at Costco, TV anchor Joya Dass revealing choicest examples of awkward dates from 15 years of dating in New York City, comedian Azhar Usman sharing his in-flight encounters with racism as a Muslim passenger, or headliner Anish Shah’s merciless verbal assault on Gujarati food, the evening was a nonstop ride of relatable and laugh-out-loud moments.

Despite the humor-filled evening, we were reminded at multiple points of the real reason behind the event: supporting and raising awareness for Save a Mother, an organization devoted to reducing maternal mortality rates in impoverished Indian villages. The initiative’s goals also include establishing free primary health care clinics, controlling tuberculosis rates, improving the quality of maternal care, and reducing water-borne diseases. The most current count reveals that tour raised an impressive total of over $20,000 for the cause. Now that’s no laughing matter.
