Kuly from RDB passes away

It is with a heavy heart that we at UrbanAsian.com share with you the news that Kuly (the eldest brother) from RDB passed away earlier today at the age of 35.  According to sources, Kuly had been fighting a battle with cancer .  He had been diagnosed with a brain tumor in April 2011.  Soon after, he underwent radiation and chemo therapy.  At the time of his death, he was in Houston, TX undergoing special treatment.  Although he ultimately lost the battle, Kuly stayed brave and positive throughout.  So much so, that beyond his family, no one was aware of the private battle Kuly was going through.

Manj, Kuly, and Surj of RDB

Kuly was one of the three main members of the supergroup RDB (Rhythm Dhol Bass) that was comprised of Kuly with his two younger brothers Surj and Manj.  The trio, based in the UK, produced bhangra music with a catchy modern edge.

In 2003, RDB won “Best Club DJ Bhangra” at the UK Asian Music Awards.  Since then, there was no turning back.  The trio produced several chart-topping Bollywood numbers including:

  • “Rafta Rafta” – Namastey London
  • “Aloo Chaat” ft. Nindy Kaur AND “Boliyan Giddha” ft. Nindy Kaur – both from Aloo Chaat
  • “Om Mangalam” – Kambakkht Ishq
  • “Paisa Paisa” – De Dana Dan
  • “Yamla Pagla Deewana” – Yamla Pagla Deewana
  • “Sadi Gali” – Tanu Weds Manu
  • and several other hit singles

Kuly also worked with Bollywood actor, Akshay Kumar, and Hollywood artist, Snoop Dogg, to produce the Singh anthem, “Singh Is Kinng“.  Upon hearing of Kuly’s passing, Akshay Kumar tweeted: “

“Just heard about Kuly from RDB’s sudden demise. Still reeling from the shock of the news. Such a talented guy, was behind some awesome chartbusters for many of my films. My heartfelt condolences to the RDB family. RIP Kuly.”

Kuly will surely be missed by all!  Please join us in passing your condolences to the group.
