The Satya Paul Design Studio was started in 1985, at a time when the Indian Fashion Industry was still at a nascent stage. Overtime, it established itself with the originality and quality of its printed fabrics and garments. Satya Paul has swiftly grown into one of the few professionally run designer brands that competes with other high-end international fashion brands.
Having re-invented the traditional sari as a modern classic, the Satya Paul product line also comprises of western clothing – including scarves, handbags, men’s accessories and fabrics – as well as an entire range of classic bridal wear. Jyoti Mohan Narula
A true progeny of the global village, Jyoti Mohan Narula has been educated in schools across the world, settling down to do his graduation from Sri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University in 1985. Armed with an MBA from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, he started his career with Digital Equipment Corporation, USA, working out of their world headquarters in Maynard, Massachusetts from 1987 to 1990.
He then decided to move back to India to work with Citibank in 1990 in the newly set up Mortgages’ division. Jyoti, with a partner, sensed an opportunity in the fashion industry and went on to start Genesis Colors Pvt. Ltd. in the year 1992. A radical move at the time, this decision has paid rich dividends with the Genesis Colors group now becoming India’s first Corporate Design House with a wide range of fashion brands that cover various segments of the market. The partnership continues to flourish and is the backbone of the rapid expansion. Genesis Colors now employs over 1500 people in its different operations with the flagship brand being Satya Paul. It also has a newly established arm in Genesis Luxury Fashion Pvt. Ltd., which distributes brands like Canali, Kenzo, Paul Smith, Bottega Veneta, Jimmy Choo, Just Cavalli, Etro across India. The company has also forged a strategic Joint Venture with the Burberry group of UK to sell that product line in India as well.
As the Managing Director of Genesis Colors, Narula heads the Satya Paul womenswear business running over 40 exclusive brand stores and also caters to over a hundred multi-brand womenswear stores in India through a state of the art digital design studio, company run factories and a vast distribution network. Another major part of his scope of operations is The Accessories division, which has exclusive stores of both men’s and women’s accessories, and is sold also through a pan India dealer/distributor network. The most famous product being the easily distinguishable “Satya Paul Neck – Tie.” These lines are also exported to several countries. The company also has a licensing tie up with The Tie Rack London Group in England and has set up 7 exclusive Tie – Rack London stores in different cities across the country in the last six months. The plan is to have over a 100 such stores in the next three years. Part of his portfolio is also another initiative with the home grown premium lingerie brand Bw!tch, designed for the contemporary Indian women, and now having over 300 doors nationwide.
The entrepreneur is a complete family man and lives in Vasant Vihar, Delhi with his parents, wife Ritu and children, Amiya and Dhruv. A health enthusiast, Jyoti has established the fitness mantra in the company by throwing open the doors of a state-of the art gymnasium, for all employees. He is also fond of water sports like swimming and rafting.
