In the most unlikely scenario, a ‘Tanglish” song penned by legendary actor Rajnikanth’s son-in-law Dhanush has become a viral phenomenon fetching over 22 million hits on youtube.
Speaking to UrbanAsian, the national award-winning actor said:
“We never imagined it would get the kind of success it has. It’s all thanks to a helping hand somewhere up there.”
‘Kolaveri Di’, which first appeared on youtube on November 16th reached over 83,000 hits in its first 24 hours. It seems as if 21-year-old debut music composer Anirudh Ravichander has struck gold with his first offering.
Since its release there have been a number of other versions released in different languages across the globe. Dhanush said:
“I’ve heard them all. It’s very flattering to hear the song being made in so many different languages.”
“My favourite versions are an American r’n’b version and the one by Sonu Nigam’s son Nevaan.”
Nevaan’s version already has 3 million hits on youtube alone.
According to Dhanush it’s the simplicity of the song that has made it so popular. He said:
“This song just has very simple beats and simple words and that’s why people are enjoying it. The lyrics are in Tanglish which is why people everywhere can relate to them.”
The song has been recorded for the forthcoming South Indian film ‘3’, which stars Dhanush as the lead opposite actress Shruti Hassan. It is being directed by his wife and Rajnikant’s daughter, Aishwarya.
When asked what it was like to be told what to do by his wife, Dhanush jokingly replied:
“It’s really the same as working with any other director, except we end up fighting on our way home.”
Though he wasn’t able to reveal much about his role in the film he told us that the situation of the song was about a man who was very much in love and very much drunk. It’s about a man who is in so much pain that after having a few drinks he ends up actually laughing away at his misery.
‘Kolaveri Di’ has had huge global success and is the first regional language Tamil song ever to see such a high rotation on mainstream music channels. Rumour has it that Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar also beat Shah Rukh Khan to purchase the rights of the song. However Dhanush was unable to confirm this for us.
The actor has also sung another track on the music album and has had many offers coming in from Bollywood. However he’s not sure he wants to venture into the industry until the right role comes his way.
