After the loss of Jagjit Singh and Bhupen Hazarika, the mus world has now lost the talented Sarangi playe, Ustad Sultan Khan who passed of kidney failure at the age of 71 Sunday afternoon. The award winning star will be put rest in Jodhpur tomorrow.
Ustad Sultan Khan is the man who brought global fame to the Sarangi, joining the music world from the age of 11. Khan was from a Rajasthani family of sarangi masters and he was initially trained by his father, Ustad Gulab Khan and then he was trained by Ustad Amir Khan, a talented classical vocalist from the Indore Gharana. Khan has collaborated with legends like Ravi Shankar on George Harrison’s 1974 “Dark Horse World Tour!” Khan has won the Sangeet Natya Academy Award twice, also known as the President’s Award, as well as the Gold Medalist Award of Maharashtra and the American Academy of Artists Award in 1998.
Khan hasn’t just changed the world of classical music but hindi pop music as well! His ‘Piya Basanti’ or his ‘Albela Sajan Ayo re’ from the movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, never failed to penetrate the hearts of listeners everywhere. Khan has worked with film industry greats like Lata Mangeshkar, Khayyam, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and many more!
