SOHO ROAD TO THE PUNJAB: FIVE RIVERS TO FIVE BOROUGHS

Next Friday, March 18, 2011, NY is about to get more desified!   Why?  Well, a new exhibition entitled “Soho Road to Punjab” will be invading 92YTribeca at 200 Hudson Street in New York, NY .  The exhibition has toured over 70+ venues in the UK and Europe but now makes it’s debut in the US at 92YTribeca.

The exhibition is inspired by the sounds of bhangra music and, of course, eclectic Indian culture which we are all proud to be a part of.  “Soho Road to Punjab” will be in NY for a 6 week period and will be kicked off in style with a free discussion panel, evening reception, and after party on March 18, 2011 (see below for details).

Over the 6 weeks, there will be displays of behind-the-scenes photography, album sleeves,
promotional art, and rare prints from South Asian media. Moreover, the event will highlight individuals who have helped further the spread of bhangra in the states.

The exhibit’s story refers to the impact New York has had on the spread of Bhangra.  Brooklyn-based DJ Rekha, a musician and curator, named Ambassador of Bhangra by the New York Times, shares her personal collection of material for the New York version of this project. She also headlines the launch party with Bhangra legend Shin, of DCS, a group that performed at Central Park Summerstage in 1996. DJ Rekha headlines Basement Bhangra in NY and is a familiar name in the states.  She has even performed for President Obama recently.
