‘Sam Bahadur’, directed by Meghna Gulzar, stars Vicky Kaushal in a lead role, with Sanya Malhotra and Fatima Sana Shaikh in supporting roles. The film follows the story and journey of Field Marshal and Chief of Army Staff Sam Manekshaw from his early years in the army during WW2, to his time as the leader of operations during the India-Pakistan wars.

Meghna Gulzar brings her film-making expertise to ‘Sam Bahadur’ and weaves Sam’s journey and story beautifully throughout the script. There are several jumps forward during the film, yet it is never confusing for the audience where they are in Sam’s story as Gulzar makes it clear with subtle changes in Kaushal’s characters’ aging, or historical details and real film.

Kaushal, who plays the title role of Sam Manekshaw, brings his A-game to the film as always. Every aspect of Sam’s character is flawlessly portrayed, through his slight hunch as he walks, his salute and his common term of calling everyone ‘Sweetie’. Kaushal’s ability to perfectly adapt to Sam’s character makes the audience feel and believe in his performance and story, without wanting to miss a small scene or skip a beat.

Sanya Malhotra plays Silloo, Sam’s wife, and although her role is limited, her performance is not. She does a great job of portraying a doting and supportive wife who also pushes Manekshaw to stand up for himself, even if that meant against the institution he was working for.
