With a length of 168 minutes, Kalank is way too long. And it also feels long because of many unnecessary things.

There’s very little that we can tell you about the film’s plot. Set in the mid-1940s in Husnabad, the film focusses on a few characters. Dev (Aditya Roy Kapur) & Satya (Sonakshi Sinha) are a married couple who are very much in love. Satya comes up with a prastaav which Roop (Alia Bhatt) accepts with a condition. This complicates a lot of things. Varun Dhawan plays Zafar, a blacksmith who works for Abdul (Kunal Kemmu). Balraj Chaudhry (Sanjay Dutt) is Dev’s father while Bahaar Begum (Madhuri Dixit) is a music teacher.

Kalank has many portions, songs & dialogues that seem unnecessary. The bull sequence involving Zafar is very tacky and doesn’t solve any purpose. The first half is all about character introductions, cheesy dialogues by Zafar and a revelation just before the intermission. While you expect the film to go downhill in the second half, it surprisingly manages to keep you involved. Of course, it’s bulky but you don’t mind that.

Kalank has way too many heavy dialogues like ‘Is rishte mein izzat hogi, pyaar nahin hoga’ or ‘Ishq ka andhapan akal ke darwaje band kar deta hai’. While the dialogues seem interesting initially, they get to you after a point.

Despite the flaws and many flabby portions, Kalank works mainly because of its story. You are interested and want to know how it’ll all end. There are action and drama (lots of it) to keep you engaged.

Kalank also works is because of its performances. Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt prove yet again that they can play different & complex characters with ease. Aditya Roy Kapur is pretty good. Sanjay Dutt and Sonakshi Sinha don’t have much to do. Madhuri Dixit deserved a meatier role. The jugalbandi between Alia & Madhuri is easily one of the film’s best scenes. Kunal Kemmu is the surprise package and acts very well.

You should go and watch this film which has a decent story backed by good performances. We give it 3 stars. ⭐⭐⭐
