NYIFF 2026 Unveils Lineup and Nominations Led by Regional Cinema

The New York Indian Film Festival 2026 has officially unveiled its highly anticipated 2026 lineup and award nominations, celebrating the best of Indian independent cinema and spotlighting the rising global influence of regional storytelling.

As North America’s longest-running festival dedicated to Indian independent films, NYIFF 2026 features an impressive slate of films across 15 languages, with regional cinema dominating major award categories this year.

Leading the Best Film nominations are Baksho Bondi, Flowers of Acacia, Romantic Affairs, Ha Lyngkha Bneng, and Victoria, showcasing a powerful wave of storytelling from Bengali, Punjabi, Assamese, Khasi, and Malayalam cinema.

 

NYIFF 2026 Celebrates Regional Indian Cinema

Presented by the Indo-American Arts Council, the 2026 edition of NYIFF continues its mission of amplifying bold and original voices from Indian cinema on a global stage.

This year’s festival includes:

  • 19 narrative feature films
  • 4 documentary features
  • 27 short films and documentaries
  • Special LGBTQ short film programming
  • Multiple world premieres

Among the most anticipated screenings is the 25th anniversary presentation of Dil Chahta Hai, the iconic coming-of-age film directed by Farhan Akhtar that transformed modern Hindi cinema.

The festival will also screen a restored 4K version of the cult classic Sholay, giving audiences a chance to revisit one of Bollywood’s most legendary films on the big screen.

Additional festival highlights include opening film Boong, closing film Tighee, and centerpiece selection Flowers of Acacia.

Festival Director Highlights India’s Evolving Storytelling

Festival Director Aseem Chhabra praised this year’s lineup for reflecting the emotional depth and social realities of modern India.

“From human dramas to comedies, and narratives that reflect the angst of Millennials and Gen Z, these works reflect a cinema that is both rooted and globally resonant.”

Suman Gollamudi, Executive Director of IAAC, added that NYIFF remains an important launchpad for independent filmmakers seeking international recognition.

Meanwhile, IAAC Chairman Dr. Nirmal Mattoo described the festival as “a powerful cultural bridge” connecting audiences worldwide to the richness and artistic excellence of Indian cinema.
