Fifteen years after Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara first hit theatres, its music continues to hold a special place in popular culture, becoming synonymous with freedom, friendship and living life to the fullest. From the infectious energy of Senorita to the soul-stirring optimism of Sooraj Ki Baahon Mein and the emotional depth of Der Lagi Lekin, the soundtrack remains one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated albums. Composed by the acclaimed trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy with lyrics by Javed Akhtar, the music wasn’t merely an accompaniment to the film, it became one of its defining emotional pillars.

Looking back, Shankar Mahadevan recalls that the foundation of the soundtrack was laid through extensive conversations with director Zoya Akhtar and the film’s writers, who wanted the music to mirror the emotional journeys of the three protagonists rather than function as standalone chartbusters. Every composition was designed to feel organic to the narrative, allowing the audience to experience the characters’ transformation through music as much as through the story itself.

Shankar Mahadevan says, “When Zoya Akhtar first approached us, the brief was beautifully simple yet incredibly layered, she wanted the music to become an extension of the characters’ emotional journeys. This wasn’t a film where songs would interrupt the narrative; they had to flow seamlessly with it. We spent a lot of time discussing Kabir, Arjun and Imran as people, their fears, aspirations, vulnerabilities and how they evolve through the journey. While composing, we constantly visualised Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol because each character had a distinct emotional rhythm. That naturally influenced the texture, tempo and mood of every song. Javed Saab’s lyrics elevated everything further because they never explained emotions; they made you feel them. Whether it was the carefree spirit of ‘Senorita’, the warmth of ‘Sooraj Ki Baahon Mein’ or the introspection in ‘Der Lagi Lekin’, every word carried meaning and helped shape the melody. There wasn’t one specific musical inspiration: we drew inspiration from the script itself, from travel, friendship and the idea of embracing life without fear. Looking back today, what fills me with gratitude is that these songs have gone beyond the film. Fifteen years later, people still associate them with road trips, friendships, new beginnings and some of the happiest moments of their lives. That’s the greatest compliment any composer can receive.”
