Today, the 3rd of December marks 10 years since Yeh Hai Mohabbatein premiered on our screens. At the time, both Star Plus and Balaji Telefilms took a step forward to break away from current norms of television, and despite airing at a late slot, the show received a resounding response, which made the channel bring the show to a timeslot which was more accessible to the masses.

The show initially took inspiration from the novel ‘Custody,’ by Manju Kapur and managed to complete a magical 6-year run on television, one of the few shows on Indian television to achieve such a milestone. The show starred Divyanka Tripathi as Dr Ishita Iyer (later Bhalla) and Karan Patel as Raman Bhalla, while Ruhanika Dhawan played the child Ruhi Bhalla. The rest of the cast was as noteworthy and began with Abhay Bhargava, Neena Kulkarni, Shahnaz Rizwan, Kaushal Kapoor, Raj Singh Arora, Mihika Verma, Shruti Bapna, Pankaj Bhatia, Aly Goni, Shireen Mirza and Sumeet Sachdev. Anita Hassanandani and Sangram Singh became iconic villains with their roles of Shagun and Ashok, respectively.
The story saw dentist Dr Ishita face numerous challenges in getting married due to being infertile. She formed a deep bond with Ruhi, the daughter of businessman Raman, and both Ishita and Raman married to ensure Ruhi’s custody in a battle with Raman’s ex-wife, Shagun.
Post a big leap in 2016, Aditi Bhatia joined the cast as the grown-up Ruhi, while Abhishek Verma played Aditya and Ruhanika Dhawan took on the role of Pihu. Avantika Hundal stepped into the role of Mihika, and Krishna Mukherjee joined the show as Aliya.
Throughout the journey, Yeh Hai Mohabbatein stood out for always introducing fresh and new thoughts which positively impacted society and inspired many worldwide. The execution of the tracks on the show was fresh, and even when there were separations between Raman and Ishita, circumstances still brought them together to face many situations. The show delivered strong messages around what true love is and that it is emotions which bring people together more than blood. YHM was also one of the first shows to show a coming together of two cultures- the Iyers who were Tamil, and the Bhallas who were Punjabi. This blend of cultures showcased traditions and rituals never seen on TV before and also generated healthy discussions around harmony and how love can connect people irrespective of background. The messages of the show are really endless!
Every actor on the show gave a memorable performance, and Karan Patel and Divyanka Tripathi’s chemistry remains one of the most iconic in television history. The show is one of the few shows which explored every character on the show too. The show also had incredible tracks filmed in picturesque locations in Australia, Budapest, and London.
Yeh Hai Mohabbatein is one of those shows that will always remain relevant to society and our lives. Despite the show’s end in 2019, its concept, characters, and tracks are still ahead of our current time. The show is a perfect example of how a show should be made and what reaches viewers’ hearts.
To the entire team of Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, Thank You for giving us a show that we hold so close to our hearts. Your hard work and pure love you all put into the show have created a piece of work that has not only become part of history but also become a major part of lives across the globe.
