Upper Hand was written by Rita Morar and produced by Amal Lad in lockdown 2021 focusing on a woman’s vulnerable thoughts on safety and it is due to release on Friday 28th October 2022. All proceeds shall be donated to the Suzy Lamplugh Trust to raise awareness on Personal Safety.

Having heard the unfortunate news of Sarah Everard in March 2021, Rita wanted to capture the frustration she was feeling through music. Putting pen to paper, she created a melody with lyrics. Rita then sought solace from multi-talented producer Amal Lad to help produce and capture the haunting mood of the song. “I have always wanted to collaborate with Amal but the right project never surfaced. However, when I wrote Upper Hand, I knew straight away that Amal would do justice to capture what I was feeling through the music and he did exactly that”.

Amal also shared his thoughts. “When Rita initially shared the idea, I immediately felt inspired to create something. I knew how I wanted the track to make me feel and I wanted the music to be raw and emotional. As a guitar player, I used the phrasing to complement the vocals almost as a second voice on the track. I feel like this collaboration was so much more than music and we really connected on a deeper level. Always such an honor to be able to work with an incredible artist like Rita”.

The song was given a public lease of life when artist led foundation Manasamitra gave Rita the opportunity to showcase this song as part of the Manasamitra ‘s 2022 Mentoring Project Digital Showcase, showcasing a cohort of women composers from minority backgrounds which Rita was proud to be a part of.

All proceeds of ‘Upper Hand’ shall be donated to The Suzy Lamplugh Trust in memory of Sarah to raise awareness of personal safety.

Suzy Lamplugh Trust is the UK’s pioneering personal safety charity and leading stalking authority, established in 1986, following the disappearance of 25-year-old Suzy Lamplugh, an estate agent and lone worker who went to meet a client and never returned. Suzy was never found and eventually declared deceased after seven years in 1993. The Trust campaigns heavily to raise greater awareness of personal safety and stalking issues, demand systematic change where needed, influence public policy, and promote a society in which people are safer and feel safer.

‘Following a growing national conversation post-Sarah Everard’s tragic death around what the public can do to increase women’s safety, people and organisations wanted to take steps to be able to address the prevalence of unwanted and aggressive behaviors such as harassment, that underly the broader cycle of violence against women and girls. The Trust offers support and courses such as Anti-Harassment Bystander Training focusing on the bystander’s personal safety as well as the victim’s.
