The trailer for Kabir Khan’s sports drama 83, starring Ranveer Singh as former cricketer Kapil Dev, has dropped online.
The film follows how the Indian cricket team, ‘a team that no one believed in’, went from being the underdogs to winning their first-ever World Cup in 1983 by beating the reigning champions, West Indies.
The video begins with the Indian team faltering on the field. Ranveer as Kapil declares at the press conference that they are ‘here to win’, inviting sniggers from the handful of reporters who attended the event.
Pankaj Tripathi, who plays the then-manager of the team PR Man Singh, tells Kapil,
“35 saal pehle hum log aazaadi jeete, magar izzat jeetna baaki hai. Kaptaan (We won independence 35 years ago but we are yet to win respect, captain).”
In the second half of the trailer, the Indian team makes a stunning comeback, with Kapil hitting one six after another, smashing dressing room windows, glasses and windscreens of cars. Deepika Padukone, who plays his wife Romi Dev, supports him off the field.
Apart from Ranveer Singh, who is playing Kapil Dev, the cast is as follows: Tahir Raj Bhasin as Sunil Gavaskar, Saqib Saleem as Mohinder Amarnath, Dhairya Karwa as Ravi Shastri, Jiiva as Krishnamachari Srikkanth. Harrdy Sandhu as Madan Lal, Ammy Virk as Balwinder Sandhu, Sahil Khattar as Syed Kirmani, Chirag Patil as Sandeep Patil, Adinath Kothare as Dilip Vengsarkar. Also, Dinker Sharma as Kirti Azad, Jatin Sarna as Yashpal Sharma, Nishant Dahiya as Roger Binny and R Badree as Sunil Valson. Additionally, Pankaj Tripathi plays PR Man Singh, the team’s manager. While Deepika Padukone plays Kapil Dev’s wife Romi Dev.
83 is now scheduled to release theatrically on December 24. The film will release in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. The big-budget, multi-starrer movie was one of the first projects which was pushed. From its original April 2020 release — due to COVID-19 outbreak.
The makers had announced a fresh date of June 4, 2021. Which was again pushed due to the second wave of the pandemic. It also stars Tahir Raj Bhasin, Jiva, Saqib Saleem, Pankaj Tripathi and Deepika Padukone. The film is produced by Kabir Khan, Madhu Mantena, Vishnu Induri and presented by Reliance Entertainment.
