Deepshikha Deshmukh Teaches Her Kids Importance Of Organic Farming

The mompreneur talks about growing her own food and deep connection to nature

Who would’ve thought that purple would look good on anything but an evening gown?

But for mompreneur, Deepshikha Deshmukh, wife of MLA Dhiraj Vilasrao Deshmukh. The sight of purple cabbages, glistening to an amethyst shade in her home garden in Latur bring an inner bliss.

Deepshikha is a locavore and few things seem more beautiful to her than rows of homegrown legumes.

The family grows most of its vegetables in its farm in Latur. The green fingers behind this is Deepshikha’s mother in law Vaishali Deshmukh. The one who tends to them personally.

“I am extremely proud and thankful to Aai who manages the farm and all the produce. She fiercely advocates healthy food and makes sure the family has enough of home-grown jevan on the table every day,” says Deepshikha who herself, spends a good many hours in the garden.

“I feel a deep sense of oneness with nature and since the lockdown, the feeling has only grown. The garden seems so alive to me as if it is saying something new every day which is why I make sure that my kids are also in the garden with me. Nothing can teach better than Mother Earth,” she states as a matter-of-fact.

The kids are taught lessons on nature and conservation – be it conserving water or the waste the garden produces.

They are also trained in techniques behind planting seeds, watering them, and the different stages of growth in a plant.

“I want my children to be knowledgeable about the basics in farming, if I may use that word. They need to be aware of the journey the food takes before it is on their plate and how good farming habits mean healthy food,” Deepshikha informed.

Deepshikha’s little daughter in fact, has taken the green crusade quite seriously. She has coined the term “Earth Trainer” and wants to become one. When asked what the word meant, the child confidently said it is someone who looks after the earth.

“I will make sure people plant more trees and use only recyclable plastic. Have studied the character of Mother Earth and she needs special care from all of us, “ the child make a strong statement.

This nature lover has taken to organic formulations in a big way. Her prior knowledge on which spices and plants work for various beauty and health concerns help her to choose plants wisely.

The preservationist also spends considerable time reading about nature while in Latur. The green garden in front of her, the clear sky at night.

When she can see the stars and even point out the planets, have given this Green Panther a new connection to everything natural.

“I have taken a pledge to reduce my carbon footprint. Mother Earth is giving us signs to be more mindful of how we live and what we consume and it is time to connect more deeply with our planet,” says Deepshikha
