The movie Masterminds may seem like a ridiculous and crazy story but what most people will find really surprising is that the movie is based on the Loomis Fargo heist, which is one of the largest heists in US history. Though the characters in the movie are shown pulling a heist in the most absurd way possible, some of the things shown are exactly what happened in real life.
Here are 4 times the movie copied what happened in real life!

1. The criminals were foolish enough to get caught on camera
The Real David Ghantt has said that he managed to disable 2 cameras in the vault, but completely overlooked the fact that there was one more. In the movie Zach does the same thing. In fact Zach even does a victory dance which David said happened too!

2. The money was literally thrown into the back of the van
During the robbery, Zach can be seen chucking literally a wall of cash into his van. This is true to reality as per the real David Ghantt. He recalls that during the real heist he was forced to clumsily chuck stacks of money into the back of his van because it was extremely heavy to carry.

3. A hitman was actually sent to finish Ghantt off
The movie shows that a hitman was sent to kill Ghantt, but ended up befriending him. The real Ghantt says that this part is true as well. The hitman that was sent to kill him, could not finish the job. The hitman ended up hanging out with Ghantt on a beach in Mexico.

4. The real masterminds alerted the Police by splurging the money after heist
In the movie, Ghantt moves to Mexico after the heist to lay low for a while. In the meantime the masterminds behind the crime began to live large and spend lavishly. Steve Chambers (Owen Wilson) is seen moving out of a small home into a large one paid fully in cash thus alerting police. The real David Ghantt has confirmed that Chambers did spend extravagantly and ended up getting caught.
Masterminds seems to be one hilarious heist movie!
