Soumita Saha’s ‘Durgotinashini’ Celebrates Spirit of Kolkata Police
Beyond Devotion: Soumita Saha’s ‘Durgotinashini’ Celebrates the Spirit of Kolkata Police
Blending the symbolism of Goddess Durga with the dedication of the city’s protectors, the multidisciplinary artist’s latest Puja offering brings a message of gratitude, courage and service.
Durga Puja in Kolkata is synonymous with celebration, devotion and the collective spirit of a city immersed in festivity. Yet, behind the elaborate pandals, illuminated streets and endless celebrations stands a force that works tirelessly to ensure public safety. Recognising the contribution of these unsung guardians, multidisciplinary artist Soumita Saha has conceived ‘Durgotinashini’, a special Puja song dedicated to the Kolkata Police.
An independent singer, songwriter and composer with parallel interests in visual art and literature, Soumita has brought together music and visual storytelling to create a tribute that extends beyond conventional festive themes. Written, composed and performed by the artist herself, ‘Durgotinashini’ acknowledges the commitment of police personnel who work through the festive season to maintain law and order and help millions of people celebrate safely.
At the heart of the music video lies a compelling visual concept. Soumita appears in two contrasting yet interconnected roles—as a devotee worshipping Goddess Durga and as a police inspector serving society alongside her male and female colleagues. The transition from a saree-clad worshipper to a uniformed officer establishes a powerful connection between spiritual strength and real-life responsibility.
Goddess Durga represents courage, the triumph of good over evil and the power to confront adversity. In a different but equally meaningful context, police personnel embody the determination and discipline required to safeguard a city. By bringing these two representations of strength together, ‘Durgotinashini’ explores how the spirit associated with the divine can find expression in the everyday acts of those who serve and protect others.
Speaking about her experience in front of the camera, Soumita admits that stepping into the visual spotlight does not come naturally to her.
“I have always been a camera-shy person, but featuring in music videos like this gives me happiness,” she says.
The project, therefore, offers audiences not only a new musical presentation from the artist but also a glimpse of her willingness to explore different forms of creative expression in pursuit of a meaningful idea.
A Poster Launch with a Purpose
The promotional journey of ‘Durgotinashini’ has followed a path that reflects the song’s central theme. Instead of opting for a conventional launch event, the official poster was unveiled through special interactions with members of the Kolkata Police, bringing the tribute closer to the people it seeks to honour.
