Poetic Justice Foundation Unveiled OVERCASTE

On March 16th, the Poetic Justice Foundation introduced “OVERCASTE: Confront. Disrupt. Evolve.” – a groundbreaking museum exhibit curated by Anita Lal and Dr. Sharanjit Kaur Sandhra. This exhibit shines a light on the often-overlooked issue of caste discrimination within the Dalit Canadian community, challenging the prevailing notion that caste is absent in Canada.

“OVERCASTE” focuses on the narratives of Dalit youth in British Columbia, aiming to shatter the silence surrounding caste in the Punjabi Diaspora. By doing so, it prompts a critical examination of privilege and the detrimental effects of caste pride. The exhibit serves as a call to action for education and advocacy, with the intention of fostering meaningful change. Scheduled to be showcased at the Burnaby Village Museum during spring break and subsequently from May 6th to September 2nd, 2024, “OVERCASTE” will later embark on a tour across British Columbia and Canada. This extended exhibition period underscores the significance and impact of the exhibit’s message, ensuring that it reaches a broader audience and sparks important conversations on caste discrimination.

“OVERCASTE” represents a pivotal moment in confronting and addressing caste-based discrimination within the Canadian context. By amplifying the voices and experiences of Dalit youth, the exhibit challenges societal norms and perceptions, encouraging reflection and action towards dismantling caste-related inequalities. Through its powerful storytelling and thought-provoking displays, “OVERCASTE” sets the stage for a deeper understanding of caste dynamics in Canada and underscores the urgency of advocating for social justice and equality. The exhibit’s journey across various regions in BC and Canada promises to ignite dialogue, inspire change, and pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable society.
