Eisha Singh has always been an actor who believes that growth comes from stepping outside one’s comfort zone. Rather than choosing characters simply because they are familiar or safe, Eisha is keen to explore roles that challenge her as a performer and demand something new from her.
“The roles that scare me are actually the ones I want to say yes to. Whenever I read something and feel that this is difficult or that I have never done anything like this before, it makes me more curious. I feel that if I am completely comfortable, I may not be learning as much as I could,” Eisha says.
She believes that an actor’s journey becomes interesting when they are willing to experiment and take risks with their choices. For Eisha, being typecast or repeatedly doing similar characters is not something she wants to settle for, as she wants every new project to bring a different experience.
“As an actor, I don’t want to keep proving the same thing again and again. I want people to see different shades of me. Every character should teach you something and should make you question yourself as a performer. Sometimes the most challenging roles can be the most rewarding because they push you to discover a side of yourself that you didn’t even know existed,” she says.
Eisha added further that taking on challenging roles also requires patience, preparation and the willingness to accept that everything may not come easily. She feels that the process of portraying a complex character is as important as the final outcome on screen.
“When you take up something difficult, there is always a fear of whether you will be able to do justice to it. But I think that fear is also important. It keeps you hungry and makes you work harder. I like preparing for a character, understanding their emotions and figuring out how I can make them feel real rather than just performing them,” she added further.
Adding more to it, Eisha says that she does not want to make career choices purely based on what is considered successful or popular at a particular point in time. Instead, she wants to trust her instincts and choose work that stays with her even after the project is over.
“There will always be trends and there will always be certain kinds of roles that are in demand, but I don’t want to chase something just because it is working for somebody else. I want to choose stories and characters that excite me. If I look back at my career years later, I want to remember the risks I took and the things I learnt from them,” she says.
Concludes Eisha,
“I think an actor should always remain curious. The moment you stop challenging yourself, you stop growing. I would rather take a role that makes me nervous and gives me an opportunity to prove something new than take the easiest path just because it feels comfortable. For me, the excitement is in not knowing exactly how far I can push myself, and that is the kind of journey I want to continue having as an actor.”
