Chhoriyan Chali Gaon Review: A Fresh Blend of Reality Show Elements and Rural Truths

Chhoriyan Chali Gaon is Zee TV and Banijay Asia’s newest offering to viewers worldwide. The show features eleven women from the city who travel to a village in Madhya Pradesh and experience the villagers’ daily life. The contestants take on tests daily to try to save themselves from nomination and elimination.
The show has been on air for over a week, and it’s quite a breath of fresh air! The concept hasn’t been seen before on Hindi television, but what wins you over is the look into the lives and issues which plague rural India. Thankfully, the show airs on Zee TV globally, enabling the Indian diaspora to experience this too.
In the first week, the contestants were allocated a house where they lived with a family. They learned skills such as lighting a fire, cooking, and more. In the second week, all contestants were put into one house, beautifully constructed, but with basic amenities to keep it as close to village life as possible.
The format of the show follows a lesson-test-result format, which takes place in each episode. In the morning, the contestants get a clue about the skill of the day, and then set out into the village to learn that skill from the villagers. They then take a test, and those who lose are up for nomination, with the winner of the test being called Chhori Number 1. The winner receives the power to nominate one contestant and put them in the danger zone for the end of the week’s elimination. At the start of the week, the task also helps determine who will be the Maalkin, lady of the house. The maalkin gets special advantages and amenities in the house.
Rannvijay Singha makes for the perfect host, as he always does, but this time, we get to see his personal touch and outlook on village life, too. He encourages the contestants and also fulfils his role as a mentor from time to time. Rannvijay is accompanied by Rangeela, a man native to the Bamuliya village, and he adds humour and further direction to the daily events on the show.
While the show takes an intense turn from time to time with arguments, betrayals, arrogance, and some privileged ‘brat’ behaviour, the contestants display their humanity when it matters most.
Chhoriyan Chali Gaon is a show which can create awareness and shift mindsets practically and realistically. It nicely blends reality show and slice-of-life elements, making for a good watch.
With an impressive start, Chhoriyan Chali Gaon earns a solid 8/10!
