Here are four such characters whose journey and values continue to resonate with audiences long after their shows aired.
Abhir – Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke
Abhir, the caring and passionate protagonist of Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke, was not just a charming young man, but a beacon of empathy and sensitivity. Anurag Basu from Kasautii Zindagii Kay was the quintessential example of a man who shattered the stereotype of the “angry young man” often glorified in Indian television. Sahil – Aapke Aa Jaane Se
Sahil, a 24-year-old man in Aapke Aa Jaane Se, was an unconventional hero who defied both age and societal expectations in the pursuit of love. His relationship with Vedika, a 42-year-old widow, was a testament to the power of pure love and mutual respect, even when society looks down upon it.
Sahil’s unwavering support for Vedika throughout their journey, as well as his defiance of societal taunts and judgments, highlighted the importance of self-respect and dignity. In a world where age gaps and widow remarriage are often stigmatized, Sahil stood as a pillar of emotional strength and resilience. His character portrayed that love is not bound by age, and that standing up for what you believe in—especially love—is the truest expression of masculinity.
These four male characters from Indian television—Abhir, Anurag, Roop, and Sahil—have left a lasting impact on viewers with their progressive, compassionate, and multifaceted portrayals of manhood. They exemplify the idea that being a man isn’t about fitting into a mold; it’s about embracing one’s individuality, breaking free from stereotypes, and having the courage to do what’s right.
