Actor Mohit Malhotra says that actors are scrutinised before people are interested in how they lead their personal lives. He says that one must not try to get too affected by their judgements.
“I think the primary reason for this is because everybody follows us. They want to know what’s really going on in our personal life, because they get to watch us each and every day on television, they get even more curious on what our personal lives would look like. This is one of the reasons that it gets more scrutinised. And just because people are intrigued and like to know what’s going on in our lives,” he says.
While this profession is uncertain, one still needs to find a balance between work and personal life, he says, adding,
“I think you definitely have to find a balance between your professional work and your personal life. But I can understand, with the pressures that we have, with the hours that we put in, and the kind of insecurities that we possibly go through, it has an impact on our personal lives. It takes a while in this profession to find a balance between your personal and professional life. I think it only gets better with time. It does bring out some sort of imbalance because you’re not able to deal with things when you have to. Especially, when you’re new to this profession, that is when, I think, you are not able to balance because you have no idea how this world functions. And I think as you get used to it with the years that you put in, the work you put in, you learn over a period of time and you realise where you are going wrong,” he says.
This industry is fast-paced, and you cannot slow down, says Mohit.
“It is up to you, I think, as you get more experienced in the profession, you start to figure out your own pace in the industry. But I think you have to sometimes also keep up with things because things are changing, times are changing, the content is changing, the platforms are changing. So, you have to make sure that you’re keeping up at their pace. Here, it’s survival of the fittest. This is not a profession where you go to work every single day, and it’s a normal day for you. Here, you have to struggle to get jobs, and then once you get a job, you have to make sure that you perform well. You need to make sure that you’re not going through any turmoil that will affect your craft. So, I think calmness of mind is very important in this profession. I think meditation is a great way to take it easy here. You have to be at peace with yourself. You have to find a balance of keeping your personal and professional life in tandem. And once you are able to do that, I think you are able to take it easy,” he says.
“I don’t think it’s a big bad world. It’s the same as any other world. It’s just that we get more scrutinised and we get more intrigued by what we’re going through because people watch us and we entertain them. So, they have already connected to us and it is just whatever good, bad, it just comes out in public sooner than other professions. But I don’t think there’s anything like ‘a big bad world’ here.”
Talking about the budding actors, Mohit says that it all depends on their attitude.
“I think for me, it’s the sincerity to their craft, the way they’re working on a set, the way they are putting themselves out there, the way they are behaving with the people around them. I think that really helps me figure out what a person would be like. Of course, I mean, in your life, you would always have good things, bad things and amazing things and incredible things. So, these are the life experiences that will keep happening and the good thing is you just learn from experience. Make it right and repeat,” he says.
