Netflix’s Chumbak has won audiences over with its quirky characters, laugh-out-loud moments and refreshing storytelling.

While every character brings their own brand of chaos to the screen, Sandeepa Dhar‘s Kiran stands apart as the voice of reason amid the madness. Looking back on how she became a part of the show and the unique challenge of portraying Kiran, Sandeepa shared:
“It happened on a random Thursday when I got a call from the director of Chumbak. He told me that Netflix and JD–Aatish were doing a show together and wanted to test me for it. I was like, “Me? Comedy?” I found it interesting because I had never really done comedy before. Then I read the scene they sent me, and it was hilarious.
The deciding factor was meeting Aatish Kapadia. He narrated the show to me and played all the characters himself while narrating the scenes. It was almost like watching a play. He is such a brilliant actor apart from being a director. I immediately felt that I had to be part of the show.
It was difficult because Kiran is probably the only character who is relatively sane. She reacts to situations in the way most viewers would be like, “What the hell is happening?” While doing comedy, you have to create humour through your reactions.
At the same time, you cannot overdo the reactions because then they can become gimmicky. I discussed that with Aatish because there is a reason he has written Kiran as the sane person in this madhouse.”
Sandeepa’s comments offer an interesting glimpse into the making of Chumbak and the creative process behind bringing Kiran to life. While the show’s eccentric characters drive much of the comedy, Kiran’s grounded perspective serves as an important anchor, allowing audiences to experience the chaos through her eyes.
The actor also highlighted the impact that creator and writer Aatish Kapadia had on her decision to come on board. His energetic narration and ability to embody every character convinced her that Chumbak was a project she simply could not miss.
As Chumbak continues to entertain viewers, Sandeepa’s performance as Kiran has emerged as a key ingredient in the show’s charm proving that sometimes, being the most sensible person in the room can be the funniest role of all.
