When did you know you wanted to be an actor?

Cinema has a huge role in my upbringing. Whether it’s the movies or the music, it takes me back to my happy place. I have always wanted to be a part of this magical world. Subconsciously, I have known since I was very young that I wanted to be an actor. But it only took a few decades and moving across continents to embrace and act on this dream.

How do you navigate your work and acting?

My business, Adore by Kanika, was launched eight years ago, and I have been blessed to have the opportunity to design my schedule. My small business and my acting auditions go hand in hand! After COVID-19, much casting is done on self-tapes, allowing me to accommodate my work tape and submit auditions online within a day. Like most other actors, I have a self-tape set up at home. It can be chaotic sometimes, but you must do what you must.

How difficult is it to be an actor or an artist today?

Every job has its challenges, and so does acting. I have been in training as an actor for the last six years and did hundreds of auditions before signing a feature film. To thrive as an actor, you must make peace with all the rejections and consistently commit to your craft. And follow a discipline always to put your best foot forward. Sometimes, there aren’t roles for you; sometimes, they get filled, and sometimes you don’t even know about them. With time, you develop a thick skin, and the ultimate test is to keep moving forward and upgrade your skills so when the opportunity comes, you are ready.

What is it like being a wife/ mom and pursuing a challenging career like acting?

I want to be a mother that my kids can be proud of!

We often glorify women who sacrifice for the sake of others and who put other’s needs before their own. How often do we celebrate women who chase their dreams and focus on their path while raising a family? I want to lead my kids so they learn by example that it is crucial to follow your purpose and passions, no matter how challenging. There is no other joy than fueling your fire within and letting the world see the light you are meant for!

Tell us three interesting facts about you.

Eating paraathe is my weakness.

I am a night owl.

I can throw a good punch.

What are your career aspirations in this industry?

I want to add value in this industry by doing meaningful work. I want to be intentional and work with a purpose. As actors and as artists, we have the responsibility to amplify messages that will bring a change for the better. I do hope to work with the right filmmakers who are driven to tell good stories and make good films. Good teams produce good work. I want to do my part as a truthful, authentic and responsible artist.

How was it working on Sardara and Sons?

It’s a family-oriented film with a big cast, so being on set was like a party! There were lots of laughs, and we made some perfect friendships!

Where do you see our community and South Asians in the field of arts and entertainment?

Not only arts and entertainment, South Asians are a bundle of talent when it comes to potential. Whether it’s leadership roles, cultural dynamics, exploring creative areas, or performing arts, this is a beautiful time for men and women of color to embrace their talents, rise in their significant fields, and take space. There is no better time than now.

What is your message for the youth?

If I could go back 10 or 20 years, I would tell my younger self to listen to my intuition and inner guidance and walk the path my heart genuinely aligns for. There is a higher reason why we are passionate about certain things because those things are the path to our calling. So honoring your heart is the way too you.
