For some reason, periods in India have always been a hush-hush thing and conversations around it happen only in coded words. The most common taboo around periods is the notions of menstruation as impurity while it’s a natural female body process.  In times where people choose to remain silent, it’s good to see celebrities like Neha Dhupia coming out and coming out and speaking out to normalize the subject.

Recently, in a Facebook post, Neha Dhupia opened up about her periods.

The actress spoke about how she was a tomboy and seeing her friends being restricted from entering the kitchen and going out to play made her very confused.

She said:

“I broke down in front my dad, clouded by these million inhibitions, expectations. He held my hand and said softly to me, ‘There’s no way anybody or anything can stop you from being who you are, doing what you want to do.’ It only took a whisper of encouragement to set me free!”

Have a look:

I was always a tomboy who'd sit the way I'd like, jump around and play with the boys. And then hit puberty, when all of a sudden I was expected to behave ‘like a girl’ - especially on the days I was menstruating. Some of my friends were stopped from entering the kitchen and scolded for wanting to go out and play. Till one day, when I broke down in front my dad, clouded by these million inhibitions, expectations. He held my hand and said softly to me, "There’s no way anybody or anything can stop you from being who you are, doing what you want to do." It only took a whisper of encouragement to set me free!Tell me about the time when someone in your life normalised periods for you, or if you brought that change in someone's life.
